My Music Culture
I don't really think that there's a particular point in time where music developed some grand importance to me, although there have been points where I have had what could almost be called "conceptual breakthroughs" experienced through music. I remember the first time that I listened to an album all the way through and how that changed my perceptions of music as a whole - how I realized how songs could take on and convey different meanings depending on the context. This kind of clued me in as to how my music listening experience changed greatly when viewed in the context of my personal experiences and life. I also remember that there was a point at which I realized how my mood both influenced and was influenced by the type of music i would listen to. This in turn affected what kinds of music I would look for and listen to in different moods. As I look back on it, music for me has always been a really personal music. When I listen to music it usually pertains to my mood or current events in my life. This holds especially true when I write music too. My lyrics and chords tend to reflect personal feelings and ideas that I wish to convey. Experiencing music, whether through listening to it or creating it, has always been for me a means of expression.

This is a very insightful piece to me because i dont play music. I like to see how music differs from making it to simply listening to it. It seems that making it has a very deep impact on you and i wish i was able to connect on that level. Thanks for the insight and rock on! Nice piece!
ReplyDeletei know exactly what you mean when you say music is personal to you because for me music isn't just a sound that is playing to keep me from being bored, i feel the music and have emotions to each song i listen to or don't listen to it if i don't have any feeling for it...the kind of mood im in definitely is reflected by the the music i am listening to so that it true to me also.
ReplyDeleteI can agree with you about different music for different moods. I do this too! I think it's just something that people almost have to do. Since music is such a big part in our lives why not find a song to convey what we're feeling.
